The Most Dangerous Animal [signature song]

There’s something breathing beyond the firelight, and every living thing already knows its name… I come out of the timber with the weather on my shoulders, with the stink of rain and river mud still clinging to my skin. I’ve learned to move where tangled briars make the trail disappear, and hear a nervous heartbeat underneath the cricket din. I know the difference between a warning and a challenge, know the silence when a predator has wandered somewhere near. I’ve watched the black bear rise and make a grown man start retreating… but I’ve never met a living thing that taught me how to fear. So let the wolf pack bare its teeth. Let the mountain lion scream. Let the rattler coil beneath the leaves and strike at anything it sees. Every creature has a weapon. Every creature has a need. But if you’re asking which one you should fear… You’re looking right at me. I belong where the trail gives out and the trees swallow the light. Where the thorn grows thick, the creek runs cold, and hungry things come out at night. I don’t need the biggest claws. I don’t need the longest teeth. Turn every animal loose into the wilderness… THE MOST DANGEROUS ANIMAL IS ME. I’ve crawled beneath the deadfall where the daylight couldn’t follow, felt the burrs tear through my clothing and the branches rake my back. I’ve crossed a swollen creek with nothing underneath me but the current, then disappeared so clean you’d swear I’d never left a track. There’s an instinct underneath me that no civilized thing could bury, something old enough to recognize the meaning of a scent. When the little hairs rise slowly on the back of every creature, that’s the body understanding what the mind ain’t figured yet. Let the wildcat stalk the ridgeline. Let the wild boar guard its young. Let the hornets boil out screaming when somebody breaks their home. I respect every tooth and talon. I know exactly what they mean. But there is one set of tracks out here you better hope you never see. I don’t conquer the wilderness. I don’t stand above the beasts. I drink beside them at the water. I leave my footprints where they feed. The same rain running down their hides runs cold across my skin. The same old instinct says survive. The same old hunger says… LET THE HUNT BEGIN. So follow the broken branches. Follow the footprints through the creek. Follow the place where every birdsong suddenly fucking ceased. Keep telling yourself it’s only some hungry animal in the trees. Then something starts moving toward you. And that something is ME. I belong where the roots grow deep enough to split the buried stone. Where the canopy kills the daylight and the wild decides its own. Let the wolf come with the whole pack. Let the bear rise up on its feet. Let every claw and fang come looking… THERE’S STILL SOMETHING WORSE TO MEET. Remember what you fucking see. There are a thousand dangerous animals out here… THE MOST DANGEROUS ANIMAL IS ME.
