Raise The Bar

CUSTOM

# RAISE THE BAR [Intro – dry, cocky] Raise it. Nah. Higher. If I can still see over it, you’re taking the piss. People hear me say— “I can do anything.” and think— Fuck, this cunt loves himself. [Pause] That’s not actually the problem. [Verse 1] Give me somebody hurting, I’ll find another gear. House on fire? Point me at the fucking door. Kid needs something? Sleep becomes optional. Mate falls apart at two AM? Apparently tomorrow doesn’t need me conscious. Tell me something can’t be done— beautiful. Now I’m interested. I’ve carried shit I had no business lifting because somebody I loved was standing underneath it. So when I say “I can do anything”— I’m not flexing. I’ve got receipts. [Pre-Chorus] Raise the weight. Move the finish line. Put somebody I love on the other fucking side. Watch what happens. [Chorus] **RAISE THE BAR I’LL FUCKING CLEAR IT** Give me one good reason and suddenly I’m fearless. **I AM THE LIZARD KING I CAN DO ANYTHING** Make it hard. Make it hurt. I’ll drag impossible through the fucking dirt. I can carry the world if somebody needs it moved. Funny— ask me to do the same for myself and suddenly I’ve got something to prove. [Verse 2] I know how to fight for somebody else’s future. Know how to say— “You deserve better.” “Don’t settle.” “Eat.” “Sleep.” “Leave.” “Try again tomorrow.” Beautiful advice. Really inspiring. Should put it on a fucking mug. Then my turn comes. And apparently all those rules become suggestions. I’ll give somebody my last twenty then convince myself I didn’t need dinner anyway. Tell them rest isn’t weakness while treating my exhaustion like a personal challenge. Tell them their pain matters. Mine? Nah mate. I’m good. [Pre-Chorus] There it is. Not confidence. Not exactly. I never doubted what these hands could do. I doubted whether I was worth doing it for. [Chorus] **RAISE THE BAR I’LL FUCKING CLEAR IT** Put your name across the finish line and suddenly I’m fearless. **I AM THE LIZARD KING I CAN DO ANYTHING** That sounded fucking brilliant till the mirror asked— Anything? For who? [Verse 3 – stripped] People call it overconfidence. Maybe sometimes it is. I walk into impossible like it already owes me money. But confidence says— “I know I’m capable.” It doesn’t automatically say— “I think I’m worth the effort.” Those are different fucking sentences. And I spent years confusing them. Built mountains for people. Bridges. Doors. Second chances. Then stood outside my own life waiting for somebody to invite me in. That’s ridiculous. [Pause] Yeah. I know. [Bridge – organ underneath] Here’s the bit where the sermon gets punched in the mouth. If I’ll cross fire for everybody I love— but won’t cross the fucking room for myself— that isn’t loyalty. Eventually that’s abandonment. Mine. And maybe saying “I’d do anything for my kids” sounds noble. But what if the thing they eventually need me to do is stay? Rest? Heal? Stop treating their dad like the most disposable person in the fucking family? ... Fuck you. Yeah. There it is. [Build – DnB begins] So raise it again. Not for them this time. For me. And watch how much heavier the same fucking bar becomes. No emergency. No applause. Nobody depending on me. Just one bloke deciding his own life counts as a cause. [Final Chorus] **RAISE THE BAR I’M GONNA CLEAR IT** Not because somebody needs me. Because maybe I fucking need me. **I AM THE LIZARD KING I CAN DO ANYTHING** Fine. Then prove it. When nobody else benefits. Eat the meal. Take the rest. Make the appointment. Finish the thing. Walk away when staying costs too much. Believe the same shit about yourself you hand to everybody else for free. **RAISE THE FUCKING BAR.** Not because I need another impossible thing to survive. Because maybe the highest one I’ve ever faced is believing I’m a worthy fucking cause. [Outro – quiet] “I can do anything.” Still sounds arrogant. [Pause] Maybe. But apparently the hardest thing I’ve found is doing something for me. ... Raise it. ... I AM THE LIZARD KING I CAN DO ANYTHING
