A Life of Luxury
Well now… pull up a stump and listen close This here’s a high-class story, y’all [Verse 1] Born behind the barn on a mattress of straw, Delivered by nature, no doctor at all. Mama smiled sideways, Daddy squinted his eyes, Said, “What kinda critter just fell from the sky?” Neighbors all stared like I tracked in some mud, Didn’t know the trouble that followed my blood. [Chorus] We was livin’ in a life of luxury, Shack in the woods and a family tree. Roadkill stew and a frog leg pie, Didn’t know poor, we was livin’ high. No gold chains, no silver keys, Just love and laughs and mosquito fees. You can keep your money, your fancy degree— We was livin’ good in our life of luxury. [Verse 2] Ate lizards and grubs, called it gourmet food, Chickens ran off, cows followed suit. Truck barely ran, tractor missed parts, Entertainment was swimmin’ holes and mud bath arts. Didn’t have much, but we had enough, Calluses, laughter, and family stuff. [Chorus] Yeah, we was livin’ in a life of luxury, Barefoot summers and a crooked TV. No cable news, no doctor fees, Just banjo nights and sweet iced tea. Rich folks laughed, but we didn’t see, Why anybody’d want more than we— ’Cause love like that comes tax-free, In a backwoods life of luxury. [Verse 3] School came rough, didn’t have many friends, Teachers asked questions ‘bout what we left when. Graduated anyway, couldn’t hold me back, Took that luxury wherever I packed. Mama in rags, Daddy in plaid, Dirtiest denim the county ever had. [Chorus] Still livin’ in a life of luxury, No fashion sense but integrity. They had suits, we had dignity, And jokes so bad they’d set you free. Didn’t need much to disagree— We was rich in ways you couldn’t see, A hand-me-down life of luxury. [Verse 4] Then one day dredgin’ the pond for grubs, Hit white rock, neighbors scratched their mugs. They called it lithium, said we were doomed, Thought we poisoned the fish and the tadpole womb. Didn’t know much, but the checks came fast, Suddenly folks forgot our past. [Bridge – slower, funny tone] New house, new truck, new tractor too, Daddy got plaid that was factory new. Mama wore dresses with buttons and lace, And town folks smiled right to our face. [Chorus] Yeah, we upgraded our life of luxury, Chrome on wheels and electricity. Friends popped up like mosquitoes in June, Everybody loved us real sudden too soon. But somethin’ felt off, couldn’t quite see, What we lost in that modern luxury— Turns out rich ain’t what it used to be, Without that old-school luxury. [Verse 5] So we sold it all and went back home, Shack by the swamp where the critters roam. Same ol’ smells, same ol’ sounds, Same ol’ love still hangin’ around. [Final Chorus – Big & Playful] Now we’re back in our life of luxury, No wallet fat, but hearts still be. Mud on boots and joy for free, That’s the kind of wealth that works for me. If money comes, it better behave, Don’t mess with the life that love already gave— ’Cause fancy don’t mean a damn to me, Long as I got my life of luxury. [Outro – Banjo + mouth harp, spoken] (chuckling) Yeah… turns out we was rich the whole time.
