Twelvefold Wheel
I need a brief change of pace from my previous songs. [Program note - concept] “Twelvefold Wheel” is a single-instrument experiment: one amplified hurdy-gurdy carrying melody, harmony, rhythm, and impact. No synths, no kit, no pads-just wheel, strings, and wood, shaped into a dark, hypnotic pulse. [Why it’s different] The piece lives in 12/8 (a rolling 3+3+2+2+2 feel), which lets the drone breathe while the chanter phrases soar. The sound is intentionally “human-machine”: the wheel’s rotary grit becomes the motor; the keybox taps become the snare; the trompette’s buzz becomes the hi-hat. [Tone + technique] A parallel blend keeps the instrument recognizable: ~60% clean DI for grain and transient, ~40% amped mid-gain for bite. Fuzz appears only at climaxes. Delay is dotted-eighth for motion; reverb is a short room to keep attacks crisp. Performance leans on double-time tremolo, coup-de-poignet bursts, wheel glissandi, harmonic pings, and percussive keybox/body taps. [Form at a glance] Intro: reverse swells reveal dual drones (D–A). Hook A: a galloping ostinato (12/8) establishes the storm. Theme A′: lyrical chanter line, then a trompette lift with syncopes (3+3+2). Breakdown: filtered drones + tap-shuffle only-breath before the surge. Solo I: melodic, with triple-stop bursts and singing harmonics. Build: accelerando, tape-echo throws, wheel pressure rising. Solo II: virtuosic sprint-fast tremolo and octave jumps. Final Hook A″: octave up, fuzz thickened, taps rolling like toms. Coda: the wheel slows; a single harmonic D hangs in the dark. [Listening aim] This is folk machinery-ancient timbre riding a contemporary pulse. The piece should feel like a storm gathering inside a single instrument, then passing, leaving the drone like low thunder on the horizon.
