[Verse 1] Used to be a chair In your old apartment Always by the window Collecting your coats Coffee stains and keys Left inside my cushions You'd fall in at midnight Tell me your ghosts [Chorus] I was just there Just there Holding all your weight Silent little witness To every twist of fate You changed your hair Your friends Your favorite place to stare But every version of you Sat in the same old chair [Verse 2] Heard your first big heartbreak Saw the mascara Dot the collar Dot the floor Dot the year you grew up Then boxes Then silence Dust in the sunlight Door clicked Truck grumbled And somebody gave me up [Chorus] I was just there Just there Holding all your weight Silent little witness To every twist of fate You changed your hair Your friends Your favorite place to stare But every version of you Sat in the same old chair [Bridge] Now I guard a hallway Of a thrift store somewhere (hey) Strangers try my balance They don't know Don't care If you walk in laughing On some random day I'll creak a little greeting Like "Hey You never stayed" [Chorus] I was just there Just there Holding all your weight Silent little witness To every twist of fate You changed your plans Your town The way you said you cared But every version of you Still lives in this old chair
