# Threads of Balance They told me it was a rug. Just wool... just color... just lines stitched together by careful hands. But they were wrong. Every thread remembers. Every knot carries a voice. Every color knows the land it came from. Before there was a weaving, there was sheep. Before there were sheep, there was earth. Before there was earth, there was balance. The Diné call it Hózhó. Not just beauty. Not just harmony. A way of walking so gently that the mountains recognize your footsteps... the sky watches over your shoulders... and the earth remembers your name. I grew up with one of these weavings. Nearly seven feet long, stretching across my childhood without ever asking to be noticed. A river of deep red. Black steps reaching outward. Soft wool holding everything together. Day after day, year after year, it never spoke... yet somehow it always said, "Balance." Then I stood inside a museum. Another weaving. Another story. This one didn't whisper. It stood. Monster Slayer... woven into wool, surrounded by lightning, movement frozen in stillness. Not a story about peace... A story about earning it. Because balance isn't something we're handed. Sometimes... it's something we fight our way back to. Then I learned another story. One without bright colors. Without careful patterns. Men walked into uranium mines. They came home covered in yellow dust. Dust on their clothes. Dust on their boots. Dust carried through front doors into kitchens, into children, into tomorrow. The mines closed. The dust didn't. The money came. The balance didn't. Because some things can't be paid back. The earth remembers. The people remember. The threads remember. And maybe... that's what these weavings have been saying all along. Not, "Look how beautiful I am." But... "Remember." Remember the mountains. Remember the land. Remember that everything belongs to everything else. Pull one thread... and the whole weaving feels it. Maybe that's Hózhó. Not perfection. Not a world without scars. But choosing... every single day... to keep weaving anyway. One thread. One story. One generation. Until balance finds its way home again.
