Long ago in the year 1784, in a town near Paris, an old man named Ben Franklin got a letter from his friend Benjamin Webb. Webb was sad and broke, he had lost everything, he asked for help to start his life again. Franklin didn’t have much money to give away, but he sent his friend some gold coins anyway. He wrote in his letter with a smile and a wink, “I’m not giving this, I’m only lending it to you. When you get back on your feet and things are going well, fiind another good person who needs help like you did, and lend them the money with the same kind words.” This is my little trick for doing lots of good, with only a little bit of money that I could. Pass it on to the next one, don’t give it back to me, let kindness travel far, as far as it can be. Pay it forward, my friend, let the circle grow, one small act of kindness can touch hearts you’ll never know. Webb took the coins and the special promise too, he promised to help the next person when he was through. Franklin hoped the kindness would go through many hands, before someone selfish made the happy chain end. He said, “This is my clever way to spread some light, even when my pockets aren’t very bright.” And oh, can you feel it? The kindness keeps on turning, from one open heart to another, no need to pay it back, just keep it learning. We’re all connected in this big wide world, so when you see someone who needs a hand, reach out and help them stand. This is our little trick for doing lots of good, with whatever we have, the way that we should. Pay it forward, dear friends, let the kindness multiply, deep in our hearts we thank the ones who first tried. Later on, when Ben was very old, he left a small pot of money in his will, just a little bit for the cities he loved. He said, “Lend it out to young people starting their work, and let it grow nice and slow for two hundred years.” That tiny pot grew and grew and grew… Until it turned into more than six million dollars by year 1990! It helped build schools, give scholarships, and support so many dreams. All because one man believed in passing kindness on. Pay it forward… for the strangers… just like Ben showed the way…one small kind act… can light up the whole wide world… and keep growing every day.
