EPISODE 11 short— COFFEE’S HIDDEN LOGISTICS JOURNEY
COFFEE’S HIDDEN LOGISTICS JOURNEY My logistics background taught me that moving coffee is not simply transporting bags between two locations. Green coffee is sensitive to heat, humidity, condensation, odours, unsuitable packaging, delays, and poor storage. A producer may spend an entire season developing quality, but part of that value can disappear during one poorly managed journey. Before export, the coffee must be inspected, protected, and correctly identified. A clean truck moves it from the origin warehouse to the port. Inside the terminal, a tractor carries the sealed container toward the berth. A ship-to-shore crane then lifts it onto the ocean vessel. After the sea journey, the coffee passes through destination handling, condition inspection, deconsolidation, and local delivery to the roaster. Throughout this journey, separate lots must retain their identity and traceability. Logistics does not create coffee quality. But it can protect—or damage—the quality and value developed at origin. This is where my two professional worlds became one. Coffee taught me why quality matters. Logistics taught me how quality, identity, and value must be protected across distance. The journey may be invisible in the final cup—but every decision along the way influences what reaches it.
