We used to meet in the middle of the road Shake hands, let the common sense show Didn’t matter red or blue back then If it helped the country, we called it a win Tell me when did simple get so hard When did lines get drawn in every yard When did “yes” become a fight all night When the answer’s shining in the daylight If eight outta ten are noddin’ their heads Why’s it stuck in circles instead? We ain’t askin’ for the moon or the stars Just a little trust in who we are Don’t we show ID to see a doctor? Don’t we show ID to catch a plane? Don’t we show ID for a job or medicine Or buyin’ whiskey on a Friday night train? So why’s it crazy to protect a vote That decides the road our country’s on? If it’s the voice of the people we believe in Shouldn’t we know where that voice comes from? voter ID…… for me. Congress on the screen drawin’ battle lines Votes already picked before the signs Party first and people last How’d the middle fade so fast? If the crowd outside agrees tonight Why’s the answer lost in left and right? No party flag, no blame to throw Just protect the thing we all call home Don’t we show ID to see a doctor? Don’t we show ID to catch a plane? Don’t we show ID for a job or medicine Or buyin’ whiskey on a Friday night train? So why’s it crazy to protect a vote That decides the road our country’s on? If it’s the voice of the people we believe in Shouldn’t we know where that voice comes from? Stronger locks on a front-porch door Make the whole house safer than before A simple step, clear and strong Helps the system carry on One small change could bring us near In a time divided by fear This ain’t some sneaky back-door plan It’s common sense we understand A chance to meet in the middle again And feel like neighbors, feel like friends Let’s build some peace, not count a win Let the healing finally begin Yeah we show ID to live our lives Every day in a hundred ways So let’s protect the one decision That shapes tomorrow’s days It ain’t about left or right tonight It’s about the red, white, blue If the vote belongs to every citizen Let’s make sure it’s true Let’s get it done and move along To fix the things we know are wrong One small step could bring us back Together on a common track voter ID…… for me.
