Funny how forever can end with goodbye. [Verse 1] I walk where the streetlights drown in the rain, hood pulled low, trying not to explain. Fog up ahead, nothing behind, just broken reflections I left in my mind. Then one face forms where the grey turns thin, another appears, then they all begin. Old eyes, young eyes, people I knew, some still sharp, some slipping from view. Some had a lifetime, some had a day, some never told me they were going away. And that’s what gets me, not that they left, but how little by little I forget what is left. [Hook] What do we leave behind when the years erase our names? A photograph, a sentence, a little piece of pain? What do we leave behind when the voice is gone for good? Maybe nothing that we planned, just the way somebody understood. A word they still repeat, a song they still can’t play, a face inside the fog that time could never wash away. [Verse 2] There’s a kid in the mist with a familiar smile, I haven’t seen that look in a long, long while. No weight in his eyes, no fear in his hands, still young enough to think grown people have plans. And I look at his face, then I look again. Is that me? Was I him back then? Before “see you soon” had another side, before I learned some goodbyes like to hide inside normal moments nobody saves, small conversations that turn into graves. You remember their eyes, but forget their voice. And one day you learn forgetting wasn’t a choice. Maybe that’s memory, broken and strange, keeping the feeling while details change. [Verse 3] There are hundreds above me, watching the street, faces with no bodies, memories incomplete. Some look peaceful, some look worn, some disappeared before I knew they were gone. And far past the road, where the grey meets the sea, the horizon keeps something I still cannot see. I wonder how much of a person survives, outside of the dates at the edge of their lives. Not what they owned, not what they achieved, but the little things somebody else received. The way that they laughed. The coffee they made. A joke told badly. A promise that stayed. A coat on a chair. A name in a phone. A message you keep when you know they are gone. And suddenly the question turns back on me: If I vanish tomorrow, what would anybody see? [Bridge] Would I be a face in the fog someday? Half remembered, carried away? A word, a laugh, a trace in time, something of yours, something of mine. [Final Hook] What do we leave behind when the years erase our names? Maybe just a memory. Maybe just a trace. A face inside the fog, a voice we almost hear. Maybe that’s enough to know we once were here.
