[Intro – Bright Analog Synth / Chorus Guitar] [Spoken male voice] May, nineteen eighty-six… One rented tux. Too much cologne. Hair that required structural engineering… [Female voice] “You ready?” [Male] “Not even close.” [Female] “For real?” [Drum machine kicks in] ⸻ [Verse 1] Pulled up slow in my father’s car, Thought that old thing looked like a Jaguar. White dinner jacket, skinny black tie, Cuffs on the sleeves and my hair piled high. She came outside in electric blue, Big teased hair and high-heeled shoes. Satin and lace, perfume in the air, I forgot every word when I saw her standing there. Mom said, “Hold still!” Dad said, “Smile!” Flashbulb caught us frozen in time. One photograph… One Saturday night… And everything felt right. ⸻ [Pre-Chorus] We didn’t have a phone in our hands, Nobody knew where the night would land. No posts. No likes. No second tries. Just seventeen… And Friday night. ⸻ [Chorus] Ohhh… nineteen eighty-six, We were young and dressed like this! Big hair, bright lights, Dancing underneath those mirror-ball nights. Synthesizers filled the room, Slow dance underneath the moon. We didn’t know those days would end… I’d go back and do it all again. Whoa-oh… Nineteen eighty-six. ⸻ [Verse 2] Shoulder pads and Aqua Net, Best damn fashion we’d invented yet. Pastel dresses, rented shoes, Everybody had something left to prove. The DJ dropped another New Wave song, That electronic beat pulled us along. Synth-pop, New Wave, rock and soul, Everybody crowded onto that floor. Then came the slow one… Lights went low… Hands on her waist— Where do mine go? [Female voice, laughing] “Easy there, dude.” ⸻ [Chorus] Ohhh… nineteen eighty-six, Nothing ever felt like this. Neon nights and teenage dreams, Living somewhere in between. Fast songs, slow songs, Everybody singing along. We thought those nights would never end… I’d go back and do it all again. ⸻ [Instrumental – Synth / Saxophone / Chorus Guitar] [Background vocals] Eighty-six… Eighty-six… ⸻ [Verse 3] After prom, we hit the road, Windows down and the radio going. Somebody knew where everybody’d meet, Parking lot full of teenage dreams. Laughing too loud, staying out late, Trying like hell not to tempt our fate. We weren’t thinking about tomorrow… We were seventeen. Tomorrow could wait. ⸻ [Breakdown – Music Stops] [Male voice] Now boys… Before you put on that tux… There’s one piece of advice Nobody tells you about prom night. [Female voice] “Oh Grody…” [Male] When you’re getting ready… Take your time with the zipper. [Pause] [Female voice] “Like…..Frank and beans?” [Male] …… “Frank and beans.” [Female laughter] [Synth drums slam back in] ⸻ [Final Chorus] NINETEEN EIGHTY-SIX! Man, there’ll never be another time like this! Big hair! Bright lights! Cheap cologne on Saturday night! New Wave playing, speakers loud, Every misfit found a crowd. No little screen between our eyes— We actually lived those Friday nights! Take me back to being seventeen, To the best damn decade we’ve ever seen. One more dance, One more kiss… Give me nineteen eighty-six! ⸻ [Outro – Warm Analog Synth] [Male voice] The tux went back Monday. The flowers died. The hairstyle… [Female] “Thankfully died too.” [Male laughs] But somewhere in an old photograph… We’re still seventeen. Still dressed too fancy. Still dancing. Still believing the night Was never going to end. [Female whisper] “Like……It was a good time.” [Male] No. [Pause] It was the best. [Synth fades / cassette click]
