Dis-Ease Disease Dis-ease Take the word apart And look at what you see Dis Without Away And aise Ease Dis-ease Lack of ease Discomfort Distress Before it ever meant What we call sickness It meant trouble It meant unease It meant misfortune It meant discomfort Dis-ease So why the fuck Is everything a disease? Every difference Every struggle Every mind that doesn’t please Label it Name it Put a diagnosis on it Then hand you something And tell you to move along “You have a disease” “Here, take a pill” But wait What if the word Was never meant To tell us who we are? What if dis-ease Is telling us Something isn’t at ease? Dis-ease Not necessarily broken Not necessarily bad Maybe something inside you Is asking to be heard And I know this one Because I resisted Being called diseased I wasn’t diseased I had dis-ease There is a difference And I felt it I knew it Because when you label The person You might stop looking At the reason What happened? What’s underneath it? What’s creating the pain? What’s creating the pattern? What’s creating the need To escape? Escape Escape Escapism The habitual tendency To distract yourself From unpleasant reality Stress Pain Fear Routine Anything that keeps you From sitting still Entertainment Fantasy Immersion Anything Anything Anything Just don’t feel Just don’t look Just don’t know ESCAPE And I think We can all relate Because who hasn’t Wanted to get away? Who hasn’t found a way To numb the day? Who hasn’t reached For something Anything To make the feeling Go away? Dis-ease Creates escape Escape Creates distance Distance Creates more dis-ease Round and round The vortex grows Until you don’t even know What you’re running from anymore And then somebody says Disease And somebody else says Pill But I’m asking What’s underneath? What’s underneath? What’s underneath? Because I watched it happen And I recognize it I recognize the spinning I recognize the escape vortex I’ve been there I know that place Where you keep moving Because stopping Means feeling Where you keep consuming Because silence Means thinking Where you keep escaping Because coming home Means meeting yourself Dis-ease Dis-ease Maybe the question Isn’t always “What’s wrong with you?” Maybe the question is “What happened to you?” “What are you trying to escape?” “What doesn’t feel safe?” “What doesn’t feel whole?” And here’s where the word Gets interesting Pharmakeia Pharmakeia A Greek word Drugs Potions Poisons And in the biblical texts Often translated Sorcery Witchcraft But don’t oversimplify it Because the ancient word Had a broader life Medicine Drugs Potions Poisons Something that could heal Something that could harm Something that could be used For manipulation And that’s where The question gets interesting Not “Is every medicine evil?” That’s too easy The real question is What are we using To bypass the problem? What are we using To bypass the pain? What are we using To bypass ourselves? Bypass God? Bypass feeling? Bypass truth? Bypass the very thing That is asking to be seen? Dis-ease Dis-ease The word is teaching If you listen Without ease Away from ease Lack of ease And maybe the body Isn’t the enemy Maybe the behavior Isn’t the whole story Maybe the symptom Is trying to speak Maybe the escape Is trying to show you Where you don’t want to look So when you see somebody Spinning out of control Don’t just ask “What’s wrong with him?” Ask “What is he escaping?” What pain Is underneath the behavior? What fear Is underneath the anger? What wound Is underneath the addiction? What dis-ease Is creating the need For escape? Because I’ve been there I’ve spun I’ve escaped I’ve searched for anything That would make the feeling stop And eventually I had to stop running And listen Dis-ease Dis-ease Not a name Not a label Not a bogeyman A message A lack of ease A signal A place inside you That needs attention So maybe don’t ask “How do I get rid of this?” Ask “What is this showing me?” Because sometimes The way out Isn’t another escape It’s finally Coming home.
