Where are we waiting for? I see people sleeping on the couch of their child’s home because they have no own home Grown men and women quiet in the dark trying not to make a sound in a house that isn’t theirs I see people sleeping in a car or a motorhome because they have no own house Parked under streetlights windows covered with blankets engine off, heart still running another night that never ends I see people going from friend to friend just to sleep because they don’t have their own home One night here, two nights there bags always half-packed smiling so they don’t get asked how long this is gonna last And every time somebody says “It won’t be long now” the calendar just turns another page Chorus We are waiting for the flip supposed to happen very soon But what is soon? Soon is a word they have to scrap out the dictionary because it is timeless This week, next week, this month without mention of a year it is useless It is useless Still waiting for the flip still sleeping on the floor still packing bags again still knocking on another door Still hearing “just hold on” still hearing “any day now” still watching the same promise slide further down the road I see the same faces in different living rooms same tired eyes same quiet “thank you” same early morning leave No lease, no keys, no claim just temporary walls and the weight of knowing this is not a place to stay And every time somebody says “The shift is coming” the clock just keeps on ticking the same way We are waiting for the flip supposed to happen very soon But what is soon? Soon is a word they have to scrap out the dictionary because it is timeless This week, next week, this month without mention of a year it is useless It is useless No date. No year. Just “soon.” A word that never lands A word that keeps you waiting with nothing in your hands They say it like a promise they say it like a plan but “soon” has no address and “soon” has no demand How many nights can a body sleep in pieces? How many friends before the welcomes get thin? How many “almosts” before you stop believing anything is coming in? I see the ones who gave up asking and the ones still checking news both of them still homeless both of them still used Used by hope that never arrives used by words that never expire used by a system that keeps saying “Just wait a little while” Where are we waiting for? A crash? A reset? A sign? A day that keeps getting postponed while the years keep getting spent We are waiting for the flip supposed to happen very soon But what is soon? Soon is a word they have to scrap out the dictionary because it is timeless This week, next week, this month without mention of a year it is useless It is useless We are waiting for the flip supposed to happen very soon But soon never comes with a year and the waiting never ends Where are we waiting for? Where are we waiting for? Where are we waiting for… …when soon means nothing at all
