The City That Forgot to Speak

+ Show full styles

I walked beneath the morning towers, while the city came alive. Thousands moving through the streets, but no one looked into my eyes. Faces passing by like shadows, windows shining cold and bright. Every room was full of voices, but the words were lost somewhere inside. And I wondered when we learned to be strangers in the crowd. How did all the things we needed become too difficult to say out loud? This is the city that forgot to speak, where every heart is hiding what it needs. We hear the traffic, we hear the rain, but no one calls another name. This is the city that forgot to speak, where silence grows between the streets. And somewhere underneath the noise, I still believe we have a voice. There was an old man by the station, watching trains come rolling through. He was holding someone's picture, like there was nothing else to do. A young girl waited at the crossing, with a letter in her hand. She looked up at all the buildings as if trying to understand. And I wondered how many hearts were waiting just like mine, for somebody to stop and listen, for somebody to reach a hand. This is the city that forgot to speak, where every heart is hiding what it needs. We hear the traffic, we hear the rain, but no one calls another name. This is the city that forgot to speak, where silence grows between the streets. And somewhere underneath the noise, I still believe we have a voice. Then a window opened somewhere, and I heard a woman sing. Just a simple human melody, like a small forgotten thing. One by one, the lights were changing, one by one, the faces turned. Maybe all we ever needed was a word we hadn't learned. This is the city that forgot to speak, but now I hear a thousand hearts beating. Through the traffic, through the rain, someone is calling out a name. This is the city that forgot to speak, and the silence starts to break. If we listen to each other, maybe we can find our way. I walk beneath the morning towers, and the city breathes again. Someone smiles at someone passing, and the silence has an end.
