[Intro — Spoken, casual] Alright, alright. You're the greatest. Nobody can touch you. You said that already. ...And then what? [Verse 1 — Playful, conversational flow] Walked in late, caught a set, grabbed a seat beside the stage, Dude was halfway through a speech about how nobody's in his range. First verse, he's a legend, second verse, he's still the best, Third verse came around and put the first one in a vest. Switched the drums, changed the flow, gave the bass another kick, Same announcement, different packaging, that's a hell of a trick. Guy beside me checked his watch, waitress started stacking chairs, I was waiting for the conflict, but the conflict wasn't there. No stakes, no twist, no consequence, nobody made a choice, Just a four-minute commercial with an overconfident voice. And the beat was pretty decent, so I tried to see it through, But you told me you're incredible — incredible at what you do? I leaned over to my friend and said, "Does anything occur?" He said, "Wait until the next verse." I said, "That's what I just heard." Then the DJ cut the music, put his hand across the deck, Pointed straight into the crowd and said, "You got something to suggest?" [Chorus 1 — Bouncy, catchy, melodic] Okay, you're incredible, I heard you the first time, You keep changing up the rhythm, never changing up the line. Got everybody waiting for a reason to react, Tell me where the story's going, not just where you're at. And then what? What happens after that? We ain't even left the first scene, And the song's almost wrapped. [Verse 2 — Beat cuts, then returns harder] Now the whole room's looking over, dude onstage said, "Take the mic." I was ready with a comment, not prepared to pay the price. My mouth wrote a check my heartbeat didn't wanna cash, But I stood and crossed the floor, heard the monitor go flat. Reached into my pocket, tried to pull my lyrics up, Phone died right before me — man, ain't that a stroke of luck? Had a hundred clever insults sitting somewhere in that screen, Now I'm standing with a microphone, forgetting how to breathe. Could've turned around and bailed, would've made the dude look right, So I told 'em how I got there, how I almost lost my nerve tonight. Drummer caught the rhythm, let the kick fall into place, I was tripping on my words, then started picking up the pace. Used the stumble as a setup, turned the silence to a break, Got the DJ laughing so hard that he almost missed the change. And the crowd was getting louder, now the whole room came alive, I hadn't claimed a single title, but at least the plot arrived. [Chorus 2 — Same melodic foundation, changed lyrics] Now I'm standing in the middle where I used to sit and laugh, Had a perfect little speech until my phone went black. Got a room full of strangers and a microphone to grab, Had to give 'em something real instead of telling 'em I'm bad. And then what? Well, I'm figuring that out. Started sitting in the back row, Now I'm standing in the crowd. [Verse 3 — Confident, sharper delivery] Last note landed, room erupted, DJ raised his hand, Said, "Alright, now trade some bars. Let's see where both of you can land." Other dude stepped forward, cleared his throat and grabbed the stand, Said, "I'm the greatest in this building, you should know exactly who I am." I said, "Hold up, that's the opening, you gave us that before. We already know your résumé, tell us something we don't know." He said, "Nobody's on my level." I said, "Cool, that's number two. Got a lot of words about yourself, but what'd you actually do?" He went searching for a comeback, started circling the claim, Different adjectives and syllables, the meaning stayed the same. I could've stood and mocked him, kept the whole thing going long, But I handed back the microphone — I'd already made my song. Walking out, my friend was laughing, said, "You nearly lost your mind." I said, "Yeah, but something happened, that's the part he couldn't find." He had four minutes explaining why he's better than the rest, I had four minutes of mistakes and still accomplished something fresh. [Final Chorus — Bigger, triumphant, with changed payoff] Now the lights are coming on and the night became a story, I walked in just to listen, left with something I could show 'em. Never needed my introduction playing louder than the facts, Didn't know where I was going till I finally took a chance. And then what? Well, that's how that one ends. Had a beginning and a middle, Now we're standing at the end. [Outro — Spoken, dry humor] Anyway... What was he saying? Oh, right. He's the greatest. Got it.
