Ionic, Covalent or Metallic? Chemical Bonding goes Pop-punk!

Verse 1 There are four types of bonding you need to know, Ionic, co-vay-lent, metallic — let’s go! Ionic = metal with a non-metal friend, Simple molecular = a few non-metals join in. Giant co-vay-lent= lots of non-metals combine, Metallic = only metals, in a giant lattice line. Chorus Ionic bonds — strong and tight, Conduct when liquid, not solid, that’s right. Simple molecular — weak and small, Low melting point, no current at all. Giant co-vay-lent — bonded strong, High melting point, don’t conduct for long. Metallic bonding — shiny and neat, Conducts electricity, conducts the heat! Verse 2 (Ionic) Ionic bonding: electrons transfer from metal to non-metal, They form positive and negative ions, can you tell? Strong attraction keeps the lattice tight, So the melting point’s high, takes a lot to break that might. Solid ionic? Ions can’t move so no flow, But as a liquid, ions move — electricity can go! Verse 3 (Simple Molecular) Simple molecular, sharing pairs of electrons, Weak forces between molecules don’t last long. Low melting point, little energy to separate, Doesn’t conduct — no de-localised electrons to migrate. Verse 4 (Giant co-vay-lent) Giant co-vay-lent: lots of atoms linked so strong, Breaking co-vay-lent bonds takes energy, so it takes long. They don’t conduct — electrons aren’t free, Except graphite, with layers and electrons that can flee. Graphite’s soft — the layers can slide, But diamond’s strong with bonds on every side. Verse 5 (Metals) Metallic bonding — metals with electrons that roam, De-localised electrons moving through the lattice like home. High melting points, strong attractions to break, But malleable — layers slide, new shapes you can make. Conducts electricity, conducts heat too, That’s metallic bonding explained for you! Final Chorus (x2 for a strong finish) Ionic bonds — strong and tight, Conduct when liquid, not solid, that’s right. Simple molecular — weak and small, Low melting point, no current at all. Giant co-vay-lent — bonded strong, High melting point, don’t conduct for long. Metallic bonding — shiny and neat, Conducts electricity, conducts the heat!
