Who works on the coffee farm? That question matters—but it is only the beginning. One person may harvest, sort and dry coffee, while another attends training, controls the income or decides how it is used. To understand the difference, separate five ideas: activity, access, control, decision-making and benefit. Who performs the work? Who can use land, equipment or information? Who controls resources? Whose voice shapes production and sales? And who benefits? Training can fail when the participant lacks equipment or authority. A premium may be paid, yet remain unknown to people protecting quality. Sustainable coffee becomes stronger when work, resources, decisions and benefits are connected. Participation means doing the work. Agency means having a meaningful voice in what that work becomes.
