One More Lap

Start the engine, here we go — straight back into traffic hell, oh no! From the very first meter, I turn into a curse word repeater. Nobody here can drive, Lord, I’ll be lucky if I survive. Trying hard to keep my cool, maybe I’m the biggest fool. Blinker left, blinker right, people braking just to start a fight. Grandpa cruising twenty miles an hour, feeling like he’s full of power. One guy honks because I’m breathing, another at the green light sleeping. My blood pressure doing flips, tires squealing, burning strips. I’m trying to get back home, feel the strain, and I already know the pain: Will I find a parking space today, or lose my mind again? I pray. Back in the day it was easy to see, there was always one spot free. Now the only empty spaces sit inside the “NO PARKING” places. First lap, second lap around the block, third lap rolling around the clock. I know every crack and curb by now, gotta find a place somehow. THERE! A free spot! My heart starts racing — Thank you, Lord! …wait, what am I facing? It’s a tiny Smart car parked sideways. Unbelievable… one of those days. Sweating like I’m in a gym, in my shoes I could surely swim. My insults getting louder and higher, almost poetic — spreading like fire. GPS says: “You have reached your destination.” Yeah buddy — BUT WHERE DO I PARK?! THAT’S the whole damn situation! Half on the sidewalk, half inside a bush — totally legal, sure, I was in a rush. Parking ticket waving at me, laughing like it’s destiny. Hazard lights on, universal excuse: “I was only gone for a minute.” Still ending up on the news. I’m trying to get back home, feel the strain, and I already know the pain: Will I find a parking space today, or lose my mind again? I pray. Back in the day it was easy to see, there was always one spot free. Now the only empty spaces sit inside the “NO PARKING” places. Then I see it — shining like gold in the evening light: a parking spot big enough for my car, alright. Perfect angle. Perfect move. Perfect parking groove. But there’s the sign: “Street cleaning every Friday.” Back out again... ain’t that fine. Final option: park somewhere near Mordor, walk twenty minutes home, that’s for sure. At this point, I just don’t care no more. Engine off. Victory music in my head. Finally home, wanna go to bed. I step onto the balcony... and see three parking spots are free. Right across. Parking... the final boss.
