Backpacks of Grace

Forty-nine years.... side by side Through the valleys low… and the rising tide We’ve tried to be hands… that help and hold Neighbors in need… hearts brave and bold We’ve both felt the fragile side of life Hospital rooms… fear cuttin’ like a knife But even in weakness… mercy shined We were vulnerable… yet blessed every time As retirement came… with quieter days We knelt in prayer… askin’ for His ways “Lord, what now?”… was our cry And Heaven answered… at sunrise Backpacks of grace… slung over shoulders Walking by faith… a little bit older Steel guitar cryin’… like our hearts did too For the lost and the lonely… Lord, lead us through We thought it was simple… “Just get up and try” Oh, how we were wrong… Lord, forgive our pride Now we see faces… not labels or shame Every soul matters… in Jesus’ name We used to think… “They chose this road” “Just quit the drink… lighten the load” But camp to camp… story to story We saw the cracks… behind the glory Mental battles… silent and deep Tears they didn’t dare… let themselves weep Not lazy hearts… not all addicted Just wounded lives… feelin’ conflicted From distant lands… of fear and fire Running from gangs… and hatred’s wire Some fled for faith… to stay alive Searching for hope… just to survive. We don’t claim answers… big or small But we hear His whisper… callin’ us all To love the stranger… the weak, the poor To open hearts… and open doors Backpacks of grace… filled with mercy Water and socks… dignity A little flashlight… for darkest nights Storm ponchos… and Heaven’s light And one small book… “Jesus Calling” To say you’re loved… though you feel you’re falling Your life still matters… don’t lose your flame You’re still His child… He knows your name I don’t have all the policies… Don’t claim to know the way But I know what my Savior said Love ‘em anyway We need a system… strong and fair Compassionate hands… willing to care Till leaders rise… and work as one We’ll walk these streets… till His will is done Backpacks of grace… hope in motion Tears and prayers… deep devotion Steel guitar singin’… steady and true Lord, make us vessels… used by You If you feel that callin’… don’t look away There’s work to do… don’t wait another day DM Outreach… we’ll stand the same Serving the least of these… in Jesus’ name Forty-nine years… and still we pray “Lord, guide our steps… every day” Till hope finds roots… where sorrow roams We’ll carry Your love… to the streets they call home… We cant do it alone. There's many more souls who need a home. Please open your hearts and let God lead us all.
