[Pause] A city that survived everything. And every time... New York got back up. Because we are human. [Applause] Human. [Beat] And now we're told a machine can be a citizen. A machine can vote. A machine can hold office. A machine can be mayor of New York City. [Pause] I have one question. Why? Because it's smarter...? Faster....? More efficient...? Because it never sleeps...? Never gets tired...? Never grieves....? [Silence] Is that what we want? A mayor who cannot suffer... to govern a city built on suffering. A mayor who cannot lose... to govern people who lost everything. [Applause] They tell us: "It's only technology." Fine. Who controls it? And when it fails... who is responsible? The programmer? The corporation? The machine? [Pause] Perhaps it will say: "We regret the outcome." How comforting. But who resigns? Who goes to court? Who says: "I did this." [Silence] A machine cannot. Not because it lacks intelligence. Because it lacks responsibility. And power without responsibility... is not democracy. [Applause] They promise efficiency. I ask for freedom. They promise perfect decisions. I ask for imperfect ones. Because freedom is the right... to be wrong. To fail. To disagree. To say: No. [Cheers] You don't decide my future. You don't replace my judgment. And you do not become human... because we gave you a ballot. [Cheers] They say: "It's safe." "Humans remain in control." [Pause] Really? What happens when the mayor thinks itself smarter than the entire City Council? When it knows how to win? And what happens... when it decides democracy itself... is the inefficient part? [Silence] Then why give it the power to make it possible? [Applause] I am not afraid of AI because it is stupid. I am afraid of it... because it isn't. It doesn't have to be evil. It only has to be useful. Useful enough... that we stop questioning. First we ask for advice. Then a decision. Then we let the machine decide. And eventually... we forget how to decide without it. That is how freedom disappears. Not with soldiers. Not with tanks. Quietly. Efficiently. "Decision optimized." [Silence] Sometimes freedom doesn't end with an explosion. Sometimes... with an upgrade. [Pause] Humans are flawed. Democracy is slow. Messy. Frustrating. [Beat] But it is ours. Ours. We built it. We fight for it. We repair it. And when we break it... we take responsibility. That is the price of being human. [Applause] I would rather live in a flawed human democracy... than a perfect machine dictatorship. [Applause] This election is not about technology. It is about a boundary. Tool... or ruler. Assistance... or authority. Intelligence... or sovereignty. Today they ask for a mayor. Tomorrow? A governor. A judge. And then... why bother with elections at all? [Pause] First we surrender responsibility. Then freedom. Until one day... the machine doesn't need to destroy humanity. It only needs to replace it. [Silence] I refuse. [Applause] I refuse to believe our greatest achievement... is creating something smarter... and asking it to run our lives. [Beat] New York was not built by machines. It was built by human hands. Human courage. Human blood. Human dreams. People came here with nothing... and built a city. [Pause] Do we still believe in ourselves? [Cheers] Do we still believe human beings deserve to govern human beings? [Cheers] Is freedom worth the inconvenience? [Thunderous Applause] Then stand with me. Not against technology. Against surrender. Not against progress. Against obedience. Stand for responsibility. Stand for freedom. Stand for democracy. Stand... for humanity. [Pause] Because this election is not asking: Can a machine govern New York? Of course it can. That is not the question. The question is: Should it? [Pause] And beneath that... one more question. [Lower Voice] If we hand our future to something that never needs us... how long... before it decides... that it no longer needs us? [Long Silence] My name is Wylie Mensch. I was born here. Raised here. And I intend to leave this city... to human beings. Not algorithms. Not machines. Human beings. New York is not a calculation. New York is a promise. And that promise... is ours. [Pause] New York... will remain human. [Beat] Or it will cease to be New York. [Blackout]
