A name in the lining

[Verse 1] Thirty years beneath white lights, Checking buttons, seams and thread, Turning collars, trimming fibres, Marking every fault in red. Nothing leaves the final table Till I've looked beneath the hem. You learn the shape of people's hands Without ever knowing them. Then one Tuesday, Inside a winter coat, Something scratched against my thumb. A square of paper, Folded twice. Seven words: Tell her I kept my promise. [Verse 2] I called the foreman. He frowned. "Someone's playing games." We opened every coat That hadn't shipped. Nothing. Then next Thursday: She still takes The long way home. A week later: After the siren. Wait. No signature. No explanation. Only handwriting Small enough To disappear Inside a sleeve. [Pre-Chorus] Give me half a sentence And I'll build the other half. Give me one closed door And I'll decide What waits behind it. We are good At making certainty From things We barely understand. [Chorus] There was a name in the lining, Something hidden in the seam. Every coat carried a fragment Of somebody else's history. I thought somebody was lying. I thought somebody had done wrong. But sometimes what we call a secret Is only something Kept too long. [Verse 3] Soren worked the fourth machine. Forty-two years At the same chair. Silver hair. Bent shoulders. Never wasted Half an inch of thread. Whenever I showed him One of the messages, His needle slowed. "Never seen it." He'd look away. So naturally I decided It was him. [Verse 4] The factory closed at seven. The siren emptied out the floor. But Soren stayed. I watched him cross The cutting room And unlock An old steel door. Inside: No stolen cloth. No money. No secret orders. Only hundreds Of small fabric squares Tied carefully With string. Each one Had a name. [Chorus] There were names in the lining, Names the building used to know. Women from the pressing tables. Men who left thirty years ago. People nobody remembers. People scattered everywhere. Not every secret Is hiding something. Sometimes someone's Keeping care. [Bridge] He said, "Before your time, When someone left, We couldn't buy them much. So everyone On their sewing line Would write one little thing. A joke. A blessing. An apology. Something they had never said. We'd stitch it Into the final coat They worked on Before they left." I asked him, "Why begin again?" He looked across The empty floor. "Because now It's the building leaving. And nobody Thought to say goodbye." [Verse 5] I should have stopped there. That would have been enough. Then I saw VALE Written Across a faded strip. My surname. The ink Older than me. "Soren..." His face changed. He sat down. Forty years Collapsed Into one chair. [Reveal] "Your mother worked At number seven. You weren't born yet. She talked about you Every lunch break. Had two names chosen. Couldn't decide. Then she became ill. Her final Friday, The whole line stayed late. Not to write something From her. To write something For you." He handed me The fabric. Twenty-three names Around the edge. And in the middle: You haven't arrived yet, But there is already A place For you here. [Dark Chorus] There was my name in the lining Before anybody knew my face. Before I learned to call this building Nothing more than work and wages. I thought my mother Left me nothing. No handwriting. No final song. But twenty-three people Had carried her hope Forty years After she was gone. [Final Verse] The factory closed that winter. Machines sold. Windows boarded. On the final afternoon I made one coat No company Had ordered. Soren cut it. I stitched the lining. Everyone remaining Signed a square. We didn't hide it For a stranger. We left it Where anyone could see. Then hung the coat On number seven And turned off Every machine. [Final Chorus] Leave a name in the lining. Leave one thing That doesn't fade. Not because somebody's leaving. Not because somebody stayed. Leave a little proof That for one moment We were standing Side by side. Some things aren't meant To remain secret. They're just waiting For the right hands To find. [Outro] I ran my fingers Over twenty-three names. Then mine. The siren sounded One last time. And somewhere Inside an empty building, I finally arrived.
