I didn't want to learn the piano I didn't want to learn the harp I wanted an electric guitar I just wanted to start I wanted the feedback And I wanted the overdrive I thought I might like distortion But my plans took a nosedive My parents kept their silence They kept it quiet My amplifier hopes We're around and about One day they said I could try They bought me the kit They sound-proofed my room And redecorated it They said that I could practice While they were out shopping So I plugged the amp in And then heard some popping ing-wee malmsteen I was not Nor was I Brian May I practiced hard for many months I practiced every day But when they came back They asked me to stop I had to unplug the equipment And there was such a lot And so I lived in silence Until the next time they went out But they never left the house again They didn't get out and about For months on end they both stayed in And all the food was delivered I never got to play the guitar again I just sat there and shivered The heating had gone wrong again The house was damp and cold The electric had gone wrong And then I just got old Now that I am seventy two I'd like to play the guitar My parents left me on my own They love me from afar If I could just plug everything in And switch it on, in order, Then I could practice scales at home Instead of heading for the border For now that I am left alone I'll try and pick it up I'll tune it now while I have the time And practice until I'm fed up
