THE THINGS WE THROW AWAY [Verse 1] Umbrellas without weather. Keys without a door. One red shoe waiting ninety days for someone who won't come anymore. Every morning another trolley. Every evening another name. Found somewhere. Claimed by no one. Everything here ends the same. [Pre-Chorus] Tag it. Number it. Put it away. Somebody loved it yesterday. [Chorus] These are the things we throw away when nobody comes to say: That's mine. I remember. I was looking everywhere. Maybe being lost doesn't mean nobody ever cared. Maybe some things leave our hands and still go somewhere. [Verse 2] Then every Thursday: one white cup. Nothing special. Cheap ceramic. Number written inside the rim. Seventeen. Forty-three. Eight. One-twenty-six. I started mapping. Streets. Dates. Bus lines. Nothing fit. Amara laughed: “You've spent too long with other people's things.” Maybe she was right. [Verse 3] Then seventeen: red mitten. Forty-three: brass handle. Eight: violin bow. One-twenty-six: green marble. Warehouse numbers. I pulled them from the shelves. Thirty-eight Thursdays. Thirty-eight cups. Thirty-eight objects I should have thrown away. [Chorus] These are the things we throw away when nobody comes to say: That's mine. I remember. I was looking everywhere. Maybe being lost doesn't mean nobody ever cared. Maybe some things leave our hands and still go somewhere. [Verse 4] Manager found them. “Friday. Clear the floor.” So Thursday night I laid them out. Mitten. Marble. Handle. Bow. Thirty-eight clues to something I didn't know. Amara picked up the marble. Looked at the number. Then at the scale. [Music Falls Away] “One-twenty-six.” She weighed it. One hundred twenty-six grams. [Silence] Seventeen. Seventeen grams. Forty-three. Forty-three grams. Nothing coded. Nothing hidden. Just weight. [Verse 5] The cups came from three streets over. Rehabilitation centre. People learning again how to hold. How to write. How to measure. How to carry something without dropping it. Thursday walks. Cup in hand. Write the weight. Come home. That was all. [Bridge] I laughed at myself. Thirty-eight mysteries where there wasn't even one. Then the woman at reception said: “Your surname— did you know Dev?” My brother. Fourteen years gone. “He designed the exercise.” [Silence] And suddenly nothing supernatural was necessary. No secret message. No final goodbye. Just something useful he once thought of still helping someone's hand find its way home. [Final Chorus] These are the things we throw away. These are the things that stay. Not because we keep them. Not because they know our name. Sometimes what survives us isn't memory. Isn't fame. It's one small thing we taught the world to do a different way. So let the mitten go. Let the marble roll. Let the violin bow leave today. Being lost doesn't mean there's nothing left to give away. [Outro] Next morning: new policy. Schools. Shelters. Rehabilitation. Use it first. Destroy it last. Young trainee asks: “Why?” I look across ten thousand things waiting to leave. Because lost isn't the same as useless.
