(11) Can Young People Create Jobs Inside the Coffee Chain?
What if a young person’s opportunity in coffee is not owning a farm—but solving a problem many farms share? Coffee regions need more than farmers. They need skilled services: nurseries, pruning, machinery repair, farm records, quality control, traceability, logistics and market communication. But training alone does not create a livelihood. Start with the customer. What problem needs solving? When is the service needed? What result matters—and is the customer willing and able to pay? Then test a small, paid offer. Measure the time, equipment, costs, customer feedback and actual income. Young women and men should help design the service, because their challenges and opportunities may differ. Training must also connect to tools, mentoring, customers and a path toward greater responsibility. Not every pilot will succeed—and that is useful learning. A coffee service becomes a credible livelihood when it creates real customer value and, after every cost, allows a young person to build a future. iO Sustainable Coffee | Respect the Bean.
