Mama leaves before the morning light, Working hard just to make things right. Counting pennies, chasing every bill, While this old house stands cold and still. Daddy’s sleeping with a bottle near, Words he said still ringing in my ears. I grab the broom with these little hands, Cleaning up what I don’t understand. I hear the children laughing down the street… Running free on happy little feet. I close my eyes and whisper to the sky… Will tomorrow ever change my life? I’m sweeping up the dust instead of dreams, Trying to be older than I seem. Every tear falls quietly unseen, In a house that’s forgotten how to dream. My dress is torn, my shoes are wearing thin, Still I hope that someday I’ll begin. To laugh out loud… to dance… to simply play,… Without these grown-up worries… every day. Mama says (Just hold on a little more.) So I keep hoping there’s an open door. Maybe someday someone will see, There’s a brighter world waiting for me… Mama… I’m trying to be brave… I’m sweeping up the dust instead of dreams, Still believing life’s more than it seems. Though tonight my little heart still cries, Hope is hiding somewhere way up high… I’ll keep dreaming…
