L.A. Love Lost | Cassian Voss

✦ ── • ── ✦ ─── •• ─── ✦ ── • ── ✦ L.A. LOVE LOST is my second Suno Collab remix-contest entry for Christian Rich’s Human Sounds “LE MARAIS.” This one became much more personal than I expected. I wrote it after a senseless argument with the girl I’m dating. We haven’t spoken for a while, and somewhere in the process of turning an older song of mine, “Paper Airplanes,” into this remix, the lyrics stopped feeling fictional. A paper airplane carries everything you are too afraid, too stubborn, or too late to say. You fold your hope into it, release it, and watch it rise for a moment - even when you already know it probably will not reach the person it was meant for. Maybe it lands in the middle of a dirty Los Angeles street. Maybe a car runs over it. Maybe hope can be fragile, unrealistic, and still completely real. This song brought tears to my eyes. Carry what I’m too afraid to say Catch the wind, then lose their way Fall where all the dirty tires scrape Paper airplanes, love poured in Folded from the nights we should’ve fixed I know they’ll never make it far Still I throw them from my heart [Post-Chorus] (Breathy layered falsetto) Let it fly Let it fall Maybe hope is nothing after all (Call, call, call, call) Still callin’ ’round the world Still callin’ you [Verse 2] I saw your text near Rosecrans Then watched the screen go dark again You said you needed space to breathe I gave you miles instead of inches Now every boulevard remembers Every red light holds me in your place Too many memories in the rearview Too many nights I chased your face French grapes sitting on the counter Le Marais glowing in my phone You were calling from another city Still somehow I felt alone [Pre-Chorus] Past the palms Past the moon Past the planes above the avenue A paper prayer A fragile truth I let it go and watched it look for you [Chorus] Paper airplanes over L.A. Carry what I’m too afraid to say Catch the wind, then lose their way Fall where all the dirty tires scrape Paper airplanes, love poured in Folded from the nights we should’ve fixed I know they’ll never make it far Still I throw them from my heart [Middle Rap] (UK male rap, restrained delivery, South London inflection, beat becomes darker and more percussive) Look, I put bare faith in a folded page Like one little plane could escape this place But the breeze turns cold by the motorway Then it drops face-down where the road gets stained I was callin’ your line from the other side Sayin’, “Love don’t die,” but the signal lied Now I’m stuck in L.A. with the roof down low While the whole city moves and I move too slow You said, “Don’t make promises you can’t maintain” I said, “Trust me once,” then I missed that train Now the words get crushed under midnight wheels But a false little hope is still something real So I fold one more, put your name inside Give it all that’s left, then I let it glide Man knows it won’t reach where you are tonight Still I watch that paper disappear from sight [Bridge] (Music collapses to warm chords and distant street noise) They spiral Drift They climb They fall A silent wish A final call One lands beneath a passing car One disappears beyond the dark One catches fire beneath a streetlight One stays resting by my heart (Female voice, distant and intimate) Allô? Pas ce soir. (Male falsetto, nearly breaking) Then why’d you answer at all? [Final Chorus] (Full emotional chorus, wider harmonies, restrained drums) Paper airplanes over L.A. Carry what I’m too afraid to say Catch the wind, then lose their way Fall where all the dirty tires scrape Paper airplanes, love poured in Every crease remembers where we’ve been I know they’ll never make it far Still I throw them from my heart Paper airplanes through the rain Every one still carries your name Maybe hope was built to break Still I fold another page [Outro] (Beat slowly filters away, distant traffic and rain) Call, call, call, call Still callin’ ’round the world Still callin’ you Paper wings across the night One last prayer One final flight (Whispered male vocal) It landed in the street (Long pause) But I still watched it fly
