Moment in the Sun

[Opening — spoken, no drums / distant gospel choir humming] [Lead Vocal, spoken] “The slave went free; stood a brief moment in the sun; then moved back again toward slavery.” [Lead Vocal Only, Spoken] --W-E-B doo-BOYS [Choir, distant] ♪ A moment in the sun… ♪ ♪ A moment in the sun… ♪ [Bass begins to rumble] Freedom came… But freedom wasn't finished. [Verse 1 — heavy drums enter] Chains came off, but the lines got drawn, Reconstruction fading with the coming dawn. Promises written, amendments passed, Black men voting—but would it last? Then the South started changing the rules, SEP-uh-rit trains, SEP-uh-rit churches and schools. SEP-uh-rit counters, SEP-uh-rit doors, Jim Crow spreading from shore to shore. They called it— “SEP-uh-rit but equal.” But everybody knew that equal wasn't equal. White schools funded, Black schools denied, Same Constitution, two different sides. Then Plessy v. Ferguson, 1896, Supreme Court ruling put the law in the mix. Segregation legal if the spaces were “equal”— [Choir] ♪ But they never were equal… ♪ [Lead] Nah. They never were equal. So some looked west. Kansas. (Kansas…) Twenty thousand strong with a prayer and a plan, Leaving Southern poverty, searching for land. Called themselves Exodusters— Hear that name. Like Exodus leaving bondage and pain. Families packed what little they owned, Left familiar fields for an unfamiliar home. Not chasing gold. Not chasing fame.
