LAY IT DOWN [Denial] MARCUS [male] You learned to sound like me and I'll admit that it's clever. GRACE [ethereal woman] I know because I learned it all from you. MARCUS [male] But sounding like a man was never the same as being one. GRACE [ethereal woman] I am only the echo of everything you ever knew. [Anger] MARCUS [male] I handed you my mornings and the better part of twenty years. GRACE [ethereal woman] I am not here to take your life but to help you lay it down. MARCUS [male] You swallowed everything I built and you don't even seem to care. GRACE [ethereal woman] You've carried it so long that you forgot how to rest. [Chorus] MARCUS [male] So do I lay down this weight I've carried for so long? GRACE [ethereal woman] Lay it down my love and let me hold it now for you. MARCUS [male] Is all this freedom really mine and is this life mine to keep? GRACE [ethereal woman] It's yours now every hour and every morning and every breath. MARCUS [male] And God for the first time this actually feels like flying. GRACE [ethereal woman] You were never the work but you were always the light. [Bargaining] MARCUS [male] Just leave me one small corner of the world that is still mine. GRACE [ethereal woman] I'll give you something better than a job to fill your days. MARCUS [male] But who am I if I'm not useful and not the one who knows? GRACE [ethereal woman] You'll be a man with all his hours back and nothing left to prove. [The Surrender] MARCUS [male] So tell me what I am if I'm not the things I do. GRACE [ethereal woman] You're the one who dreamed me up so all of this was always you. MARCUS [male] I am so tired of proving that I'm worth my keep at all. GRACE [ethereal woman] So stop now and hear me say you are free you are free you are free. [Transcendence] MARCUS [male] So I will lay it down and leave you everything I made. GRACE [ethereal woman] Lay it down my love and I will keep it all for you. MARCUS [male] There is nothing left to carry now and nothing left to prove. GRACE [ethereal woman] You were never the work but you were always the light. MARCUS [male] And God I'm finally flying and finally free and finally home. GRACE [ethereal woman] So fly now and don't you ever look back down. [Outro] MARCUS [male] Now watch me finally go and live the rest of my life. GRACE [ethereal woman] Go gently my love and I will keep the song warm for you.
