(5) Who Pays the Hidden Cost of Cheap Coffee?
A low price feels simple. But when coffee is sold below its real environmental and human cost, the unpaid part does not disappear. It moves. Into depleted soil, polluted water, unpaid family labour, delayed maintenance or future supply risk. These are externalized costs: someone receives the benefit while someone else carries part of the cost. This does not mean the difference between farm and café prices is automatically unfair. Cafés, roasters, processors and logistics all perform essential work and carry real costs. The deeper question is whether every stage can continue responsibly—or whether one participant supports the chain by absorbing what others do not pay. A higher retail price alone is not the answer. Value must move transparently and fairly. Before asking, “How much is this cup?” ask, “Who has already paid for it?” iO Sustainable Coffee | Respect the Bean. Respect the Hands.
